Use of chlorthal-dimethyl in New Zealand
26 August 2024
The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) is gathering information on the use of chlorthal-dimethyl in New Zealand, which is traded under product names Dacthal, Deramot Xtra, and Chlor-Back 75 WG. The product is used as a pre-emergent herbicide predominantly for onions, garlic, and shallots.
This information will inform what regulatory action the EPA should take to manage the use of this substance. The EPA's action has been brought on by the United States Environmental Protection Agency issuing an emergency order to suspend the use of pesticide products containing the active ingredient chlorthal-dimethyl.
Onions NZ and Vegetables NZ have been working with HortNZ to prepare information on the product's use, and implications for growers and businesses.
On behalf of the sector, HortNZ is engaging with the EPA, Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), and other relevant parties. Preliminary information will be sent to the EPA this week.
Use of this product aside, product groups are aware of declining options for crop protection and are engaged with Ministers and officials about the possible consequences.
