An Oriental fruit fly found in Birkdale, Auckland
21 February 2025
A single male Oriental fruit fly has been detected in a surveillance trap in Birkdale, on Auckland’s North Shore.
While this is the same species as the recent find in Papatoetoe, there is no evidence of a connection between the two flies at present. Biosecurity New Zealand is undertaking genetic testing to determine whether a link exists, with results available in the coming days.
In the meantime, Biosecurity New Zealand is moving quickly to look for any other fruit flies in the area and eradicate them. At this stage, only a single male fly has been found, with zero evidence of a breeding population.
